Revamping and Renaming

Posted in Site Info on December 5th, 2006 by (contact)

I want to change the name and look of the site. The brotherhood part is getting to me, and something that’ll be a little easier to type out wouldn’t hurt (I’ll keep the URL as a label). Also, the design has been the same from the start, so I’m just ready for something new.

I’ve yet to come up with what the new name might be, but plan on promoting the site a lot more once it’s in place – suggestions, please!

We have a podcast. Any movies or mp3’s that are linked in posts should be showing up normally. The file will be named by the name of the post, and the text of the post will appear in comments. In order to keep it pretty, we’ll have to use HTML equivalents of some characters, like ampersands, quotes, apostrophes, etc. This page has a list of common HTML character codes.

The link for podcasts is

I’ve also added a link in the right column to subscribe directly with iTunes.

When posting movies and audio, only include one file per post if you want them to show up properly in the podcast. Otherwise only the first file will be included, while the description will still list all of them.

New Site Features

Posted in Site Info on May 18th, 2006 by (contact)

A new page has been added “Authors” which lists everyone who’s posted, along with how many posts they have, as well as an rss feed for each author. Now, clicking an author’s link by a post will take you to a page with all of their posts. Also, the about page needs some work, or needs to be deleted – I’m not sure if it’s even necessary, though I do think some sort of description for the site is a good idea.

Site Design

Reccomendations or discussion about the look and layout of the site are very welcome as well – I’m thinking about changing the colors around a bit, maybe at least taming down the orange a little.

Eritalog, and a New Audio Player

Posted in Audio, Site Info, Songs on May 13th, 2006 by (contact)

Killing time in EWR.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Using a new audio player plugin, quite nice (thanks Ari), displays tag info, with a progress bar, configurable pretty nicely as well. To use it, type

To include a download link for the file, just link to it normally somewhere in your post (I’m updating previous posts to use this player).

Quicktime Embedding Plugin

Posted in Site Info, Video on May 10th, 2006 by (contact)

I just installed a plugin from mobvcasting that’ll let you embed your quicktime movies directly into your posts. All you have to do is put

[QUICKTIME 320 257]

where the 2 numbers are the sizes of your movie, and the url, naturally, is your own URL. It’ll load up and play like the movie below.

[QUICKTIME 180 145]

That’s what it’s called – not my idea. Anyway – if you post from Firefox, you’ll have a nice toolbar to insert things into and format your posts. Safari don’t do it. Supposed to work soon, but I don’t know how long ago the page that said “soon” was written. So if you want some more convenience while you post, use the Firefox.

Here we go, Mind Pigeons!

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

To link in an mp3 to play like this one, just put an aboslute link to it in your post. Which can, of course be a link to something you uploaded here. Contact me if you need the ftp info.
Update! See newer post for info on embedding your song in your post! Still include a link if you want your song to be downloadable.

Contact Info for Posts

Posted in Site Info on May 9th, 2006 by (contact)

Currently each post will include the author’s name as well as a link to their email address. The address is encoded to prevent spambots from harvesting them. I feel like ideally each user would have their own page on the site with some general info, and links to all of their posts, but this works for now. Could also have it link to the person’s own site, offsite. Any feedback on how this should be handled is very welcome.

Brotherhood of the Octopus Night?

Posted in Performance, Site Info on May 9th, 2006 by (contact)

Would anyone be interested in doing a night somewhere? I have been thinking about trying to get a night were I can get a bunch of people together and show off what we are working on in a live setting. It would be more about playing for each other instead of caring about the audience (which I can guarantee will be minimal). I just think it will be fun to see what we are all working on. It’ll take a little more time for the contributors on the site to increase to a point where we can actually fill ot a night, but, I thought I would get the idea out there and see if there is any interest.

Uploading Issues

Posted in Site Info on May 9th, 2006 by (contact)

So, I’m working with my host to get some uploading issues resolved. Ideally, everyone will be able to upload whatever they’re doing to this server, and link to it or embed it in their post. As of now, there is a 6MB limit on uploads, which even still seems iffy (tried uploading a 2mb mp3 and no luck). Any posts linking to media files, for now, will have to link to files offsite, though they can still be embedded. Using an absolute url link to your mp3 will drop it into your post, playable on the page, with an easy link to add the mp3 to the viewer’s bookmarks. Crude as hell right now, improvements to come.

Welcome to Brotherhood of the Octopus. Please see the About page to get the idea of what’s going on here. Everything is probably going to be changing a lot in the next few weeks, as the design is worked out, galleries are added, as well as ways of handling other media, RSS feeds are smoothed out, and as new people sign up. Anyone wishing to join should contact any member with a very short description of their work or why they’d like to sign up (just enough to show you’re not a spam bot), and a login and password will be emailed to you.
